This is a very humbling moment for me as I take on the role of the new President of the Genitourinary Pathology Society (GUPS). GUPS was founded in 2018 with a vision to advance the care of patients with urologic diseases through improvements in the subspecialty of urological pathology by enhancing best practices, research, and education. Within this short span, the society has achieved many goals that its founders envisioned.
GUPS represents over 700 members from more than 53 countries on 6 continents. It is a dynamic, transparent, and inclusive organization. GUPS is an official Companion Society of the United States and the Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP). GUPS has also produced many high-impact white papers and practice guidelines which have influenced the new WHO classification of GU tumors. GUPS is one of the prime sources for urological pathology education. Its “Case of the Week (COW)”, “high-yield virtual digital slide collection”, “Educational videos” and “Literature watch” are among the wide array of resources available to our members (free). Members can take advantage of over 250 searchable COW and over 70 fully annotated high-yield digital slides by accessing the website. “GUPS Virtual Education Series” which was launched in early 2022 has 3 exciting components. It provides practical diagnostic updates in the major GU organs. The “emerging voices” showcase newer or “less in the public eye” GU-focused pathologists. “Multidisciplinary Tumor Board” discusses, with the presence of clinical colleagues, the state-of-the-art management of urological diseases
GUPS also has an exciting future ahead! The society recently reached an agreement with Advances in Anatomic Pathology (AAP), publisher Wolters Kluwer (WK), to become a sponsoring society of the journal. AAP, which publishes state-of-the-art reviews by distinguished experts, recently with a thematic approach in each issue will issue a rigorous ‘peer-reviewed’ annual GUPS supplement, including GUPS committee-generated guidelines and best practices, proceeding of consensus conferences, and/or scholarly reviews of interest to our members. As a benefit to the society, GUPS members will receive an option for a discounted online annual subscription. GUPS is also expanding its outreach programs both nationally and internationally.
I personally invite you to join GUPS and be part of expanding community. Let us continue to build “our” society!
